over the past several days ive been playing with a bunch of armor designs for Freckles04’s dragon age OC @ Warden’s Vigil, devlin.
dev just got a new job as a guard and so gets an equipment upgrade (unsolicited costume designs are a hazard of roleplaying with me, ha). the top row is mostly me just playing with different silhouettes, including one swing at a late-renaissance tabard, which i discarded even before inking (it’s just not the same when you can’t wear a ridiculous hat and mustachios with it). the bottom row i tried to do actual research for.
mostly been drawing from ~14th century european armor, which is characterized by the transition from mail to plate, so theres a lot of the two being mixed. its not exact, though; his weapon of choice is the bow, so the armor is designed with mobility in mind (most of what would normally be plate is cuirboulli, leather thats been hardened by boiling it) and leaves the joints pretty flexible.
the version with the gipon is the closest to what was actually worn in the period, having replaced the longer, flowing surcoats and tabards that came before. but this is fantasy, and tabards/surcoats are cool, so i drew some anyways :v
